And action! Winter holidays in Ylläs
Welcome to the winter wonderland of Ylläs
Ylläs is not only the largest ski resort in Finland, but also a true paradise for winter activities. There’s really everything here – from exciting descents on steep slopes to magical moments on a horseback ride through the quiet landscape. We give you nine tips for the perfect snow holiday.
Finland’s longest slopes
No other Finnish ski resort offers descents or height differentials as great as the wonderful slopes of Ylläs. The 63 groomed slopes run from Ylläs-Fjell towards the villages of Äkäslompolo or Ylläsjärvi; the view from the 700 metre-high peak of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and the other six fells is spectacular. Fells are high areas above the forest border. Beginners and advanced skiers can let off steam in the Ylläs ski area from November to the beginning of May.
Through the Ylläs Fell by bike
There are many ways to explore the snowy fells of Ylläs – one of which is by bike. In order to have a secure grip on the snowy trails, it is best to let a so-called fatbike with oversized tyres in winter, including electric if so desired. There are some expert rental companies in the area that even offer guided tours. This way you can exercise and discover the enchanting forest paths with a view of the ancient, glittering white fells.
On the horse through Lapland’s silence
On the back of a horse, you can experience the unspoilt nature of Lapland in a unique way. The animals go steadily through the deep snow, and only the horses’ soft, steaming breath breaks the silence of the idyllic landscape. With a bit of luck, you can discover traces of reindeer, moose or hares – or even catch a fleeting glimpse of one of these shy animals. Ylläs also offers a variety of guided horseback riding where a certain riding experience is beneficial.
Cross-country dreams and cosy breaks
Of course, there is also a large network of cross-country ski trails in Ylläs, where you can glide through Lapland’s enchanted landscape. Of the total 300 kilometres of Lopipen, 30 are illuminated, which is particularly pleasant in the dark season in Finland. Along the trails, there are some cosy cafés where you can recharge your batteries for the next stage with delicious donuts and hot coffee.
Snowmobile action to Kolari
If you like something a little more adrenaline-packed, a snowmobile ride may be just what you need. The humming motor will take you over frozen lakes and past spruce forests until the gentle hills and fells of Ylläs rise into the blue sky in the distance. A popular tour is the 40km-long Ylläsjärvi Hannukainen-Kuertunturi-Ylläsjärvi route; for beginners, a shorter tour to the impressive Lapland Hotels SnowVillage in Lainio (open only in winter) is a great option. For those seeking peace, head south to the authentic seaside villages of Kolari.
Frosty hikes through the winter wonderland
Snowshoes buckled and off you go! If you want to explore the landscape in Finnish Lapland in winter, you can let suitable shoes and poles from some suppliers in Ylläs. Snowshoes offer support in soft snow, where you would sink in with normal shoes, possibly up to your waist. The marked paths show the way, the speed is up to you. Those who fancy can also take part in guided hiking tours, which often include a delicious lunch package or Lapland dinner.
Winter fun in Ylläs for children
In the Ylläs ski area, there are also special courses for children of all ages for most winter sports. The programs and lessons are tailored to the needs and skills of younger guests, and professional instructors ensure children can learn winter activities safely and with a lot of fun. There are long tobogganing hills for sledding in Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi for very young guests. Afterwards, you can warm up with sausages on the grill in small huts.
Freshly caught adventures: ice fishing
A combination of action, nature and relaxation, ice fishing is an unforgettable experience for the whole family. Together with an experienced guide, you’ll head to the frozen lake, to the right spot to make a hole in the ice. The ice may be up to one meter thick, so there is a lot of physical strength needed. While waiting patiently for the catch, sit back and watch the sun on the glistening ice. This is particularly good if you hold a steaming cup with a hot drink in your hand...
Aurora floating: Relaxation under the aurora
Let your body and mind drift and feel the crystal clear waters of the Finnish lakes carry you. A rescue suit will keep you warm and dry, and professional guides will help you to enjoy the magical atmosphere and clear sky above you. Ice floating is a special experience in the evening when the Aurora Borealis appear in the sky. There are various providers that offer Aurora Floating by Lake Äkäslompolo or Lake Ylläsjärvi.
