From La Pared in the southwest to El Cotillo in the northwest: Fuerteventura is a slice of paradise not only for kitesurfing and windsurfing pros, but also for beginners. The beaches along the Costa Calma in the south are particularly suitable for newbies and ideal for a sports-filled family holiday. Numerous surf camps and schools offer surf courses for children as well as for the whole family – such as the Otro Modo Surf School.
Top surf and kite spots in Fuerteventura
The classic: René Eglis empire in Sotavento
Situated in the southeast of the island, this surf spot boasts the most consistently reliable winds, making it a popular choice for windsurfers and kiteboarders of all skill levels. The guests at René Egli’s windsurfing and kiteboarding centre get to practice their sport at the Playa de Sotavento lagoon. Swiss-born Egli has built a real empire: from courses and shops to hotels and après surf, the Rene Egli Center has everything surfers and kitesurfers could ever wish for.
Swimming, surfing and kitesurfing at Flag Beach
The beaches around Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura feature crystal-clear, dazzling azure water and views of the islands of Los Lobos and Lanzarote. The northern stretch of the mile-long Flag Beach (Corralejo’s local beach) is a real treat for windsurfers and kiteboarders. The middle section is reserved for beachgoers and swimmers, whereas surfers, from beginners to experts, can enjoy riding beach break waves at “El Burro” in the southern zone.
Western Fuerteventura – an insider’s tip
The island’s rugged west coast is harder to reach than Fuerteventura’s popular north, which also means it is less crowded. Having said that, the reliable waves in the El Cotillo area have made this spot a choice location for surf schools. When the north-easterly Passat wind blows cross-shore in summer, and the conditions are suitably mild, even windsurf beginners and kiteboarders can look forward to enjoying a fun-filled surf experience. The steep waves in winter are only recommended for experienced surfers and kiteboarders.
A gem for surfers: La Pared
The bays situated at the edge of the small fishing village of La Pared are perfect surf spots where even the smallest swell transforms into a surfable wave. Those looking for a change from all the surfing should not miss the chance for a hike across the rocky coastline with breathtaking vistas.
Another gem for surfers: Jandía
The Jandia Peninsula is lined by beaches with fine white sand. The area near the lighthouse offers abundant small waves for beginners to practice on, whilst more advanced surfers will enjoy riding the bigger waves further out at sea. Featuring cafés, restaurants and surf shops, an evening visit to the former fishing village of Morro del Jable is recommended.
