Time to enjoy the sand
Spanish philosopher Miguel de Unamuno referred to the oldest of the Canary Islands as ‘an oasis in the desert of civilisation’. After all, Fuerteventura impresses above all else with its richness and variety of sea and beaches. City beach, natural swimming pool, or ‘popcorn sand’ – let us take you on a journey to discover the island’s unique beaches.
No snacking, please!
How about laying your beach towel out on popcorn rather than white sand? Pop a handful in your mouth whenever you fancy – all while enjoying the view of the ocean as the waves break on the sharp-edged rocks. A visit to Playa del Bajo de la Burra beach could be something like that since its surface really does look surprisingly like the traditional cinema snack – even if it is actually washed-up seaweed and you had better give eating it a miss after all! Instead, take a walk and follow the coast towards Corralejo to enjoy some delicious tapas and cocktails.
The sea: so near – and yet so far
If a somewhat different beach getaway takes your fancy, we recommend spending a day at the natural swimming pools ‘Piscinas Naturales Aguas Verdes’. While you will not find any soft, white sand here, the area has plenty of rocky outcrops for sunbathing. And while the waves thunder, splash, and spray behind you, you can lie back and relax in the natural open-air whirlpool that may not have any bubbles, but therefore crystal-clear water that allows a perfect view of the bottom. The sea has surely never been so near – and yet so far.
A beach to relax on: Playa Grand Tarajal
Build sandcastles, dive below the water’s surface to discover sparkling fish, splash around in the shallow water, relax on your beach towel and sunbathe, play a round of frisbee, or simply gaze at the waves – Playa Grand Tarajal is the perfect place for relaxing. And since the sea air is known to make you hungry, the perfect way to finish off a perfect beach day is to enjoy a delicious meal of seafood in one of the many restaurants along the promenade – all with a sea view, of course!
Small but exquisite: Playa Esmeralda Norte Beach
Esmeralda is not only the name of the protagonist in the novel ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ and the Spanish word for ‘emerald’, but also a small and delightful bay near the village of Costa Calma. Surrounded on either side by barren hills, white sand as far as the eye can see, shallow turquoise water, and a constant lukewarm breeze, it is a real treasure. Our tip: Palmitana Pepe & Antonia is a little snack bar and the perfect place to enjoy a glass of sangria in the evening sun.
Beach with a history
Playa de Garcey beach is the site of a shipwreck with quite a history: the ‘America’. The United States Lines cruise ship got stranded off the west coast of Fuerteventura during a storm in 1994 and even though the ship has deteriorated so much that it cannot be seen most of the time now, it is still worth visiting the beach simply to enjoy the view of the surrounding rock panoramas. But keep an eye out! At low tide, parts of the wreck still emerge above the waves.
