Discover the impressive Black Sea coast
The Black Sea coast of Bulgaria is the country's most important tourist region. The Black Sea guarantees beach fun, as its beaches are among the most beautiful in all of Europe thanks to their fine sand and clean water. Besides the well-visited main towns and party strongholds around Varna and Burgas, there are also quieter bays as well as romantic and impressive villages along the 380-kilometre-long coast.
Cape Kaliakra
The legendary Cape Kaliakra lies in untouched nature, about 60 kilometres north of Varna. With its up to 70 metres high red rock formations, it is considered one of the most impressive places on the coast. Its caves are inhabited by seals and - if you are lucky - you can spot dolphins from the top of the cliff. The cape is also a nature reserve and home to over 400 plant and 300 bird species.
Saint Constantin and Elena
The seaside resort Saint Constantine and Elena is the oldest health resort in Bulgaria and is located about 10 kilometres north of Varna. The resort gained its fame due to the unique combination of fresh mountain air and the mineral water springs, which are said to have a healing effect. Furthermore, a visit to the nearby monastery - to which the place owes its name – is worthwhile. There you can find the original monastery which now hosts an upscale restaurant beside the church.
Varna
The harbour town of Varna is the centre of the northern part of Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. The city with the beautiful city beach has been considered a health resort for over a hundred years. Even in the earliest times of what is now the third largest city in the country, Varna was deemed an important port and trading centre. A special attraction is the sea garden located directly at the coast. It begins at the harbour and expands for several kilometers along the coast . The impressive complex was built in 1878 and has been enlarged and embellished over and over again ever since.
Obzor
The small village of Obzor has become a popular holiday destination in recent years. Compared to many other places on the coast, however, Obzor is still quiet even in high season. A perfect combination of modern holiday resort, history and culture awaits you. Today, Obzor is one of the richest towns in Bulgaria also thanks to tourism. The beach is 10 kilometres long and features fine golden sand and crystal clear waters.
Nessebar
Nesebar must not to be missed on your trip along the coast. The town is bursting with ancient history and culture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. It lies on a long peninsula and is only connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The whole area of the old town of Nessebar is an open-air like museum with a special charm awarded by the narrow and winding cobblestone streets.
Pomorie
Pomorie is a small and very pretty town in the southern part of the country, about 20 kilometres north of Burgas. It offers everything for a perfect summer holiday. The beach is fine and golden and of such good quality that it has been awarded a Blue Flag, the environmental award for beaches and bathing places. Most hotels offer medical treatments with healing mud for which the town has been very famous for since ancient times. Nature lovers should also plan a detour to the nearby Pomorie Lake.
Sozopol
Sozopol and its picturesque old town – which is classified as a historic place - is situated on a rocky peninsula south of Burgas. In recent years, the former fishing village has developed into a small holiday centre whose popularity is mainly explained by its idyllic location. The place still attracts numerous students, artists and intellectuals, but it has nevertheless managed to preserve its originality and tranquillity. Two beautiful bays with lovely sandy beaches invite you to swim.
Sinemorets
Sinemorets is the southernmost village on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast at the picturesque mouth of the Veleka River. The cosy holiday destination with its beautiful beaches and good restaurants as well as the untouched nature attract numerous tourists. Nevertheless, it is still little developed for tourism and is mainly popular with Bulgarian guests. Peace and relaxation are therefore guaranteed.
