Discover Lefkada
In addition to the stunning beaches, Lefkada also offers breathtaking scenery and a few impressive sights that are best explored by car.
Lefkada town
Lefkada town is located in the north of the island and is connected to the mainland by a suspension bridge. It has a modern marina and an inviting waterfront promenade with many restaurants, taverns, and bars where life happens in the evening. During the day, the lively pedestrian street Ioannou Mel with Agios Spyridon square and the church of the same name is the centre of activity. There is also an archaeological museum. The last still inhabited monastery of the town, the Fanomeri Monastery, offers a wonderful view of Lefkada town and the beaches of Ai Giannis and Mili.
Agia Mavra
Directly in front of Lefkada town is the Agia Mavra fortress which was built around 1300 by the Venetian Giovanni Orsini. The castle has got its name from the patron saint of Lefkada, Agia Mavra. The small church was built in her honor and is somewhat hidden in a remote corner of the fortress. In front of the castle, a narrow strip of land encloses the Gyras Lagoon which is home to many protected bird species.
The Faneromeni monastery
The monastery is the only one still in operation on the island and an important monument of the region. It is located on a pine-covered hill four kilometres west of Lefkada town and features a beautiful view towards Kastro, Gyra, and Ai Giannis. It looks back on a centuries-old history which probably begun in the early apostolic period. Moreover, legend has it that the beautiful temple of the goddess Artemis was located here.
Cape Doukato
Another recommended destination and a great photo subject is Cape Doukato, or Cape Lefkada as it is also called. The well-maintained road leads you to the southernmost point of the island and to the beautiful lighthouse at the very end of the cliffs. The views of the blue sea and neighbouring islands of Ithaca and Kefalonia are mesmerising. This place made a name for itself in Greek mythology. It is said that the poetess Sappho has thrown herself from one of these white rock faces into the sea and thus into her death because of lovesickness.
Nidri
Nidri is a popular holiday resort on the east side of the island and is especially popular with families because of the calm sea. Stroll along the main street and buy a nice souvenir in one of the many small shops. After that, treat yourself to a local delicacy with a view of the sea and the offshore islands of Madouri, Geni, and Skoripios.
Dimosari waterfall
This natural and impressive gorge with the Dimosari waterfall is located in the hinterlands of the holiday resort of Nidri on the east coast of the island. From Nidri it is about four kilometres to the car park and then a ten-minute walk to the waterfall. We recommend sturdy shoes for the sometimes slippery and wet passages. Pack your swimming trunks, as it will feel good to cool down.
A drive through the mountains
The roads on Lefkada are narrow and winding but well-maintained. We therefore recommend that you also discover the green hinterlands and the mountains and immerse yourself in the island feel. Stop in one of the charming mountain villages like Karia which famous for its traditional embroidery. Moreover, enjoy a plate of locally produced and reputedly Greek’s best lentils in Eglouvi.
