Adventure holidays with huskies and reindeer in Lapland
Fantastic winter wonderland in the Far North
Around Kittilä, in the heart of the Arctic wilderness, authentic experiences with reindeer and huskies await you, bringing you closer to the raw beauty and fascinating wildlife of Finland. Let our tips inspire you and plan your own Lappish winter wonderland.
Spend the night at Torassieppi Eco Reindeer Resort
The Torassieppi Eco Reindeer Resort in Muonio is a hotel in the middle of the Lappish wilderness that focuses entirely on the typical Finnish reindeer. Just five minutes away from the cosy hotel rooms is an almost 200-year-old farm where reindeer are bred and which also serves as a museum. All year round there is information, guided tours, hands-on activities and a restaurant serving first-class Finnish cuisine with local ingredients.
Arctic celebrities in Levi Husky Park
The majestic animals in the Levi Husky Park are practically celebrities - they have already made several appearances in films and commercials. In addition to the energetic huskies, the park is also home to rare wolfhounds, cunning foxes, reindeer and the Arctic fox ‘Nappi’. The team is happy to explain interesting facts about the farm and its animals. If you wish, you can go on a sleigh ride with the huskies and an experienced musher across the frozen lake and through the silent, glittering winter landscape of Finland.
An adventure day at the Tundra Husky Farm
Anyone who spends a little more time with huskies will realise that each of these lovable dogs has a character all of its own. You can experience this up close at the Tundra Husky Farm, where over 80 Siberian huskies are kept and trained by an experienced crew. The farm also offers a three-hour tour through the Lappish wilderness before returning to the farm for a hearty dinner of reindeer soup and freshly baked bread.
Have the courage! Drive a husky sled yourself
If you've always wanted to drive a husky sled yourself, you can try it out at the Scandinavian Travel Group in Levi. Here, experienced guides will show you everything you need to know about working with these sensitive dogs. As soon as you feel safe on the sled, you set off: A pack of huskies will then pull you 20 kilometres through the picturesque winter landscape of Finnish Lapland - a unique experience that is sure to be remembered for a very long time.
Elven magic in the Tonttula Elves Village
A visit to Tonttula is a magical experience, especially for the youngest guests. On the banks of the River Ounasjoki in Köngäs, about half an hour's drive from Kittilä, you will find the mysterious world of ‘Santa's elves’. The programme also includes a reindeer enclosure, home to the magnificent animals that, according to legend, faithfully pull Santa's sleigh.
Visiting reindeer herders
For those who appreciate the traditional, a trip to a classic reindeer farm is well worthwhile. A snowmobile will take you from Levi to the remote enclosure, where you will be surrounded by a fascinating herd of majestic reindeer. An experienced reindeer herder will share his in-depth knowledge and stories about these adorable animals with you, after which you can warm yourself by the open fire and enjoy hot drinks and pancakes.
Exciting tial period: be a musher for once
How about spending a few hours or even days as a musher, i.e. as the driver of a dog sled? Host Juho from the Husky Ranch Lapland will introduce you to your own team of powerful huskies and prepare you for a journey through the snow-covered landscape of Lapland. Then it's off past Europe's largest wetland, Teuravuoma, and deep into the ancient, mystical taiga forests. Such an excursion is not to be underestimated physically, but it is an unforgettable experience.
A break in Sammuntupa
Sammuntupa is one of the oldest cross-country ski cafés and undisputedly the cultural centre in Levi. Since 1982, cross-country skiers have been coming here to recharge their batteries after a strenuous run - or in between. Today, the café also has a small museum, traditional saunas by Ounasjoki with panoramic views of the Valkkovaara landscape and a reindeer enclosure. A trip to this picturesque place is definitely worthwhile.
