An oasis of relaxation in Tunis: Hotels where you can unwind
Royal Victoria Hotel
Have you ever stayed overnight in a former embassy? The Royal Victoria Hotel makes it possible. If the richly coloured walls could talk, they would certainly have some secrets from these exciting times to reveal.
This centrally located four-star hotel has 39 rooms and suites, all individually and authentically furnished in a pre-Victorian style. Contemporary equipment such as flat-screen TV and high-speed internet is also a must. The restaurant Aicha serves Moorish-style dining or al fresco dining on the terrace overlooking Tunis.
El Patio Courtyard House
Feel at home in this small three-star guest house, with three cosy rooms set up in a busy part of the medina. The family-run house has a long history dating back to the 18th century and has an authentic atmosphere. Solo travellers and couples in particular are made to feel at home here. “Slow Tourism” is particularly important to owners, and they support their guests with valuable cultural and culinary tips.
Dar El Jeld Hotel & Spa
Close to the Kasbah Square, you’ll find the five-star boutique hotel Dar el Jeld, offering 16 luxurious suites in different sizes. Let yourself be pampered in the on-site spa and hammam, or seek calm in the idyllic hotel garden. In the evening you can unwind in the rooftop bar and see out the day with views over the Medina.
Dar Ben Gacem
This boutique hotel in the Medina combines two abodes: after their street names “Ben Gacem Pasha” and “Ben Gacem Kahia”. Here you can stay in a total of 15 rooms from different eras, all with a private bathroom, access to the courtyard and roof terrace. The hotel has been decorated with attention to detail: the furniture is handcrafted one-offs, and the materials and décor used are exclusively from Tunisia; otherwise, the hotel maintains traditions and organises exhibitions or readings that revolve around Tunis and support local artists.
La Villa Bleue
Half an hour drive from the Medina, La Villa Bleue is a 5-star hotel overlooking the Mediterranean in the picturesque Tunisian suburb of Sidi Bou Saïd. With its stylish architecture, the villa lives up to its name and harmonises many blue and white decorative elements and accessories (in the style of the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Saïd).
The hotel has a pool, spa area and gym. The hotel’s shuttle service makes it very easy to get to nearby attractions, and if you need any other excursion or activity tips, the hotel staff are more than happy to help you.
Novotel Tunis Lac
An alternative to accommodation in the city centre is Novotel Tunis Lac. This modern hotel is located in a newly developed Tunis district on the saltwater lagoon with cafes, restaurants and malls. With easy access to Tunis Airport and downtown, it offers the standard and amenities of an international hotel chain. A generous breakfast buffet, pool and terrace lined with palm trees are the highlights of the hotel complex.
