Experience holidays with huskies and reindeer in Lapland
Wild winter fairy tale in the far north
Around Kittilä, in the heart of the Arctic wilderness, you can expect authentic experiences with reindeer and huskies that bring you closer to Finland’s rugged beauty and fascinating wildlife. Be inspired by our tips and plan your own Lapland winter fairy tale.
Stay at Torassieppi Eco Reindeer Resort
The Torassieppi Eco Reindeer Resort in Muonio is a hotel in the middle of Lapland’s wilderness that focuses entirely on the typical Finnish reindeer. Just five minutes from the cosy hotel rooms is a nearly 200-year-old farm where reindeer breeding is carried out while serving as a museum. All year round, there is information, guided tours, participation offers and a restaurant serving premium Finnish cuisine with local ingredients.
Arctic celebrities at Levi Husky Park
The majestic animals in the Levi Husky Park are virtually famous – they have already made some performances in films and commercials. In addition to the energetic huskies, rare wolf dogs, clever foxes, reindeer and the Arctic fox “Nappi” live here. The team is happy to explain interesting facts about the farm and its animals. If you like, you can go on a husky dogsled tour with the huskies and an experienced musher across the frozen lake and through the quiet, glittering winter landscape of Finland.
A day of adventure at the Tundra Husky Farm
If you spend a little more time with huskies, you’ll find that each of these lovely dogs has its own unique character. You can experience this close up at the Tundra Husky Farm, where there are over 80 Siberian husks that are supplied and trained by an experienced crew. A three-hour tour of Lapland’s wilderness is also offered here, before a hearty dinner with reindeer soup and freshly baked bread is served back on the farm.
Only for the brave! Drive the husky dogsled yourself
Anyone who has always wanted to ride a husky sled himself can try this out at the Scandinavian Travel Group in Levi. Experienced guides will show you all about working with the sensitive dogs here. As soon as you feel safe on the sled, you set off: then a Husky pack will pull you 20 kilometres through the picturesque winter landscape of Finnish Lapland – a unique experience that is sure to provide very long-lasting memories.
Elf enchantment at the Tonttula Elves Village
A visit to Tonttula is a magical experience, especially for the youngest guests. On the banks of the river Ounasjoki in Köngäs, about half an hour’s drive from Kittilä, the mysterious world of the “Santa’s elves” is found here. The programme also includes a reindeer enclosure that houses those magnificent animals who, according to legend, faithfully pull Santa’s sledge.
Visiting reindeer breeders
A trip to a classic reindeer farm is very worthwhile to those who appreciate tradition. A snowmobile takes you from Levi to the remote area, where you will be surrounded by a fascinating herd of majestic reindeer. An experienced reindeer breeder shares his deep knowledge and stories about these loving animals with you, before warming up by the open fire and enjoying hot drinks and pancakes.
Embracing new experiences: being a musher
How about spending a few hours or even days as a musher, a guide on a dog sled? Host Juho from the Husky Ranch Lapland introduces you to your own team of powerful huskies and prepares you for a journey through the snowy landscape of Lapland. Passing Europe’s largest wetland, Teuravuoma, we then head deep into the ancient, mystical Taiga forests. Such an excursion is not to be underestimated physically, but it is an unforgettable experience.
A break in Sammuntupa
Sammuntupa is one of the oldest cross-country cafés and undisputedly the cultural centre of Levi. Since 1982, ski cross-country skiers have come here to regain their strength after – or during – a strenuous day. Today, the café also includes a small museum, traditional saunas at Ounasjoki with panoramic views of the Valkkovaara landscape and a reindeer enclosure. A trip to this picturesque place is definitely worthwhile.
