Edelweiss tips:
When cycling in Sicily and the Catania area, there are a few things to keep in mind. Caution is required in urban areas with heavy traffic where chaotic traffic conditions are common. When cycling in more rural areas, aside from admiring the beautiful countryside, cyclists are advised to watch out for potholes. Particular care must be taken when Mount Etna shows volcanic activity. As appealing as it may seem to climb the volcano during periods of volcanic activity, it can be highly dangerous – the ash billows out of the volcano onto the roads in the area, making them slippery.

On two wheels to Mamma Etna Difficult
There are various ways to cycle up Mount Etna. The Cantoniera dell’Etna – which is where the road ends – can be reached via the southern ascent or the northern flank. The northern flank is along a nice stretch of coastal road before reaching Mamma Etna, which the Sicilians call ‘their’ volcano. The route proceeds through lava fields, with lemon and orange trees lining the sides of the road and which is dotted with a few B&Bs whose owners are always happy to welcome guests on bikes.
