Antiquity and avant-garde

Split is rich in history, art and culture. If you only have a short time, concentrate on the most important attractions. These include the Meštrović Gallery. The namesake is one of Croatia's most important artists. History fans can look forward to the Archaeological Museum with impressive finds from Roman times, and the Zlatna Vrata art house cinema shows ambitious films - often in the original language.

Split serves up

Dalmatian cuisine is simple, fresh and full of flavour. The traditional restaurants, called ‘konoba’, smell of grilled fish, octopus and rosemary - often right by the water. Those who prefer more modern flavours will find creative interpretations in stylish bistros. Don't miss: ‘pašticada’, braised beef in a red wine sauce. Too heavy? Fresh seafood with a glass of local white wine is also delicious here.

Springboard onto the water

The city is the gateway to one of the most beautiful sailing areas in Europe - ideal for island hopping. The islands of Brač, Vis, Hvar and Šolta with their hidden bays and crystal-clear waters are just a few minutes away by boat. From May to October, constant winds and calm waters ensure the best conditions. Those with little sailing experience can go on guided trips or day trips with one of the many providers.

Active with a view: Marjan Hill

At the western tip of the old town lies Marjan Hill - a green paradise in the centre of the city. At 178 metres high, its summit, Telegrin, offers the best view of Split and the sea. The landscape is particularly atmospheric early in the morning or at sunset. Locals and visitors alike are out and about on well-maintained paths, walking, jogging or cycling to enjoy the tranquillity of the pine forest.

On tour in the saddle: horse riding in Žrnovnica

Horse riding is often associated with the Dalmatian hinterland. But the sport is also making a comeback on the coast, for example in the former quarry of Žrnovnica, just 20 minutes from the centre. Here you can take riding lessons or hire horses for rides. The trekking routes around the Perun hill and the picturesque village of Gornja Podstrana are particularly attractive.

A city tour with a difference: in a kayak

The city tour with a difference: in a kayakSplit can be almost completely circumnavigated from the water. In a kayak, it becomes a quiet, intensive exploration of the city. Past the old town, under Marjan Hill, into small bays - this opens up completely new views of the coastline. The direct experience is what counts here: close to rocks, water and nature. Ideal for anyone who wants to combine activity and views.

Split on two wheels

Cycling is becoming increasingly popular in Split - with locals and visitors alike. There are hire facilities everywhere in the city, with classic bikes and e-bikes. The route along the coast to the east of the city centre, along the promenade to Žnjan beach, is perfect for relaxed tours with a view of the sea. The hinterland is more challenging, for example on the routes towards the Mosor Mountains or to the observatory via Dubrava.

Spa is a must

Split is good for you - and not just on holiday. Emperor Diocletian is said to have treated his rheumatism here with sulphurous spring water, which is why he had two thermal baths built in his palace: one for himself and one for guests. Today, Split continues this tradition. In addition to the healthy climate, modern spas and many wellness offers invite you to regenerate - ideal for anyone who wants to consciously do something good for themselves.
